At Sonora Foods we firmly believe that we have a responsibility to build a better community, both locally and globally. This is why we strive to do what we can to either lower our energy footprint, contribute to our local community, and help out with global charities.
The recent events in Chile and Haiti have hit their respective communities very hard. In Haiti specifically, the destruction and suffering have been unimaginable, so we knew we must do our bit to help.
Sonora Foods employees dug in and made personal donations to Haiti through the Red Cross. These donations qualified not only for government matching but corporate matching by Sonora Foods as well. So, for every $1 donated by our employees, the Red Cross Haiti relief efforts received $3.
Sonora Foods also made a corporate donation to the Red Cross for earthquake relief in Chile, hitting close to home, in Santiago and Chillan, where Oscar and Juan have their roots, friends, and family.
Sonora Foods is also involved with the local community here in the GTA, with a regular weekly donation of our famous tortillas to The Children's Breakfast Club, thus helping young minds with the nourishment they need to start the day, learn, and grow. Sonora also makes contributions to several community food banks and charities such as Foodpath Food Bank, Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of Canada, and Second Harvest.
Making tortillas requires energy, so minimizing our energy footprint is important to us. To this end we at Sonora Foods participate in a Green Energy Option for 100% of our electricity usage, both at our warehousing facility and manufacturing plant.
The Green Energy Option is achieved through the purchase of Ecologo (www.ecologo.org) certified Renewable Energy Credits from major hydro and wind power producers such as Shell, Ontario Power Generation and Brookfield Renewable Energy. This ensures that renewable energy gets injected into our local electricity grid and also helps to ensure that large scale renewable production continues to take place.
